'A World Lit Only By Fire' is an angry and gloomy motherfucker. From the start, you're being battered with pummeling, gritty low end, piercing dissonance and industrial cold. It paints a dystopian picture in my mind - of bulldozers slowly crawling through a wasteland and people hiding in sheer panic, hungry and desperate for a glimpse of hope. But in 'A World Lit Only By Fire', there is no such thing. Simon Sludge
Godflesh are the masters of all that is industrial metal and they are so damn great at it!! Justin K Broadrick is an absolute genius, a freaking legend. Darknight
Knockout debut from a Buffalo, New York-based hardcore band who like their riffs sick, their drums fast, and their choruses sticky-sweet. Bandcamp New & Notable Mar 28, 2024
The Minneapolis band add a horn section, a running surrealist allegory about walls, and an occasional nod to the elegiac to their electroshocked post-punk. Bandcamp Album of the Day Mar 4, 2024
What a lot of hardcore bands forget is that trafficking only in vitriol, rage and protest misses the point. You need music that elevates it all beyond noise and into the realm of anthems. Fucked Up manage to do that about three times in every song, while teasing out much gentler strains of sound throughout. If I were a youngster back when this came out I probably would've moved to Canada. The only band who did it better was Husker Du, who also managed to transcend the limitations of the form. brooklynboy
